Barkberry Yard are a high quality grooming salon founded in 2020 off the back of many years of experience grooming and teaching.
We are passionate about making dogs look and feel their best and we love helping others achieve the same satisfaction in their work.
We offer high quality grooming courses tailored to you. Our courses will give you a full qualification with city and guilds whose high standards ensure each student who passes does with quality in their chosen path.
Whether you are a complete beginner or looking to develop your grooming skills further, we can work with you to provide bespoke training packages to suit your every need.
During your training you will be using the majority of your time in the salon for practical, hands on experience working on a large range of breeds and styles. Each day at our salon is different and you will pick up a lot of different skills.
During your time with us you will also learn how to correctly deal with a variety of coat types, different temperaments and will be able to carry out important health checks on all dogs in your care.

All our tuition is to City & Guilds standard and takes place at our training centre in Northamptonshire.
We take only 1-2 students at a time so that we can offer you a more relaxed, 1-1, experience with our highly trained tutors who have over 10 years worth of combined animal care and grooming experience.
Courses:
One Day Taster
We offer a one day “taster” course which allows you to have an insight into how a busy salon runs and help you decide if grooming is for you!
On the day you will take part in all aspects involved in grooming and will have opportunity to ask questions and learn more about becoming a groomer.
The one day taster MUST be undertaken if you wish to enrol on a course with us and you have no previous grooming experience.
Those who have already obtained their level 2 qualification through one of our training courses do not need to take a taster course before enrolling onto the level 3.
The cost of the taster course will be deducted from the balance of a full price course should you enrol within 6 months of attending.

City & Guilds Level 2 (7863-02) for Dog Grooming Assistants.
The Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants is for anyone who wishes to pursue a career in dog grooming and would like to learn the basics.
It is best suited to those who would like to work in a salon before undertaking their level 3 Diploma.
You will learn how to health check and handle dogs correctly, how to bathe, dry and properly prepare a coat ready for styling and some basic styling and scissoring.
You don’t need any previous qualifications to take this course.
City & Guids Level 2 (7863-02) Plus- learn to groom
Take the level 2 assistant qualification but also learn how to groom. With this plus course you will learn how to groom a full teddy bear cut and a natural trim puttng you well on your way to becoming a dog groomer.
City & Guilds Level 3 (7863-03) Diploma for Dog Grooming Stylists.
For those who already hold their level 2 qualification who wish to further their learning and pursue a career in dog grooming either in a salon or starting their own business.
You will recap everything covered in the Level 2 course, including correct handling and health checking, legislation and customer service. You will then progress quickly into styling dogs of all breeds. Learning how to use clippers to get the best quality cut and how to scissor correctly and safely to achieve a high standard of
finish on all grooms you produce.
This will allow you to gain the practical skills and knowledge to ensure that you are fully prepared to work as a professional dog groomer whether you chose to be self employed or want to work with others in a salon.

City & Guilds level 2 (0146-21) Dog walking
This qualification is for anyone, aged 16 and over, who may be looking to pursue a career in dog walking or who wants to have qualifications to back up their dog walking job/business. You will gain practical skills and knowledge that are important for working as a competent and safe dog walker. With councils now bringing in licences that need qualifications to obtain, this level 2 certificate is a perfect string to add to your bow.

The assessment for this qualification will be one to one practical assessment alongside oral questioning.
There are no other recognised qualifications for dog walkers at this level, therefore this qualification demonstrates to both employers and public that you have the correct practical skills and knowledge required of a professional dog walker.
The qualification is made up of one unit with four tasks which will be worked through over the 2days and end with an assessment.The units include completing record sheets with new clients and behavioural assessments. Taking a dog for a walk and the risks and dangers on walks plus how to deal with them.
City & Guilds Level 2 (0146-20) pet sitting
This qualification is for anyone, aged 16 or over, who may be looking to pet sit or already is pet sitting and wants a qualification to back up their licence and business . On this course you will gain practical skills and knowledge that are important for working as a competent and safe pet sitter however you must already hold a level 2 qualification in an animal related area to undertake this course for example the pet walking level 2 certification.
Pet sitting can involve looking after a wide range of animals to include cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs, through exotics, pet pigs, chickens, sheep and goats for example. This course will give you all the information needed to start your journey into the pet sitting world. Pet sit in confidence after learning about the following starter topics- roles and responsibilities of a pet sitter, the legislation and codes of practice, potential problems including injuries and emergencies. This course consists of just one unit split into the above categories and is completed over 3days with four tasks, ending with one practical assessment and oral questions.
